Djokovic Edges Federer in Final to Claim Fourth Indian Wells Crown
atpworltour.com: March 22, 2015 Indian Wells, USA - Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer entered their BNP Paribas Open final rematch playing exceptional tennis. Neither had dropped a set en route to the championship showdown, dispatching some of the world’s best with apparent ease.
World No. 1 Djokovic succeeded in carrying that relentless momentum into his 38th battle with the Swiss on Sunday afternoon, withstanding nerves and wild momentum shifts to successfully defend his title with a 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-2 win over the 33-year-old World No. 2.
With his fourth title in Indian Wells, Djokovic matches Federer as the most successful competitor in tournament history and becomes the 12th player in the Open Era to capture 50 titles, surpassing his coach Boris Becker at 49. The 27 year old fell to Federer just three weeks ago in the Dubai final, where he failed to convert on any of his seven break opportunities. It was a different story in California.
"It's great that I managed to win this match in the big tournament and to win it in a way that I felt like I was the better player on the court," Djokovic said. "It's going to give me confidence, not just for future matches that I play against [Federer], but just for Miami and the rest of the season."
"Novak did well to sustain the lead for most of the match; I think he found an extra gear in the end," Federer said. "It was tough. You know, I enjoyed the match; it had a bit of everything. Controlled aggression was the key out there to try to play like that from the baseline.
Djokovic will take home $900,400 and 1,000 Emirates ATP Rankings points for his efforts. With 138 weeks at No. 1, he is now just three weeks away from tying Nadal for the sixth-most weeks at the summit of the Emirates ATP Rankings (since August 23, 1973).
Halep Rallies Past Jankovic to Win Biggest WTA Career Title
wtatennis.com: March 22, 2015 Indian Wells, USA - She seemed down and out time and time again in the match, but Simona Halep hung in there and just kept coming back, eventually battling past Jelena Jankovic in a thriller for the biggest WTA title of her career and the No.1 spot on the Road To Singapore leaderboard.
Things didn't look pretty for Halep early on - while Jankovic came out firing, holding serve handily and ripping her trademark down-the-lines to perfection, the Romanian seemed off, putting together a -10 differential of winners to unforced errors in the opening set (8 winners to 18 unforced errors). Jankovic had all kinds of leads in the the second set, too, going up 3-1 and, after letting that break go, breaking again for 4-3 and 5-4, even serving for the match in that game. But Halep wouldn't let go of the match, squeaking out some very close games to take that marathon 63-minute second set, 7-5.
There was nothing routine about the third set either, as the players traded breaks three times back and forth, but again it was the No.3-seeded Halep who came through in crunch time, breaking the No.18-seeded Jankovic one last time in the final game of the match to finally close it out, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4.
The World No.3 gave the former World No.1 some major props in her speech at the trophy ceremony. Before these two weeks, Halep's biggest WTA titles came at the Premier 5 level - Doha last year and Dubai earlier this year. And by capturing her first Premier Mandatory-level title in Indian Wells, Halep jumps past Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams to take the No.1 spot on the Road To Singapore leaderboard, the year-long journey to the BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global.
