Rafael Nadal Bids to Win 9th Conde de Godó Trophy

April 21, 2014 ITS Staff: Barcelona - Rafael Nadal will try to win his record ninth Conde de Godó Trophy this week. The World No.1 defeated countryman Nicolas Almagro 6-4, 6-3 in last year's final at the Banc Sabadell Open in Barcelona.

 

Nadal’s record eight title in Barcelona improved the Spanish players' domination of the event for the past 11 years.  Nadal won from 2005 to 2009, and 2011, 2012. Tommy Robredo won in 2003, and in 2010, Nadal did not play giving way to compatriot Fernando Verdasco who won the title. 

 

Nadal did not compete in 2010 giving way to compatriot Fernando Verdasco who won the title and continued Spanish players’ domination of the event for the past ten years. The Barcelona Open held at the Real Club de Tenis is oldest tennis tournament in Spain and one of the of the most prestigious clay court tournaments on the tour. The ATP World Tour 500 event will be celebrating its 61st edition this year. The first Conde de Godó took place in 1953.
