League Leaders Micromax Indian Aces defeat DBS Slammers 28 – 24 in Dubai Leg
iptlworld.com: December 11 2014 Dubai, UAE - The last and final leg of the inaugural Coca-Cola IPTL presented by Qatar Airways kicked off in Dubai on Thursday. The players were quick in getting into the groove with some explosive tennis on display in the UAE. Dominating from the very beginning, the Micromax Indian Aces beat the Singapore Slammers 28 – 24.
The first five apiece set went into a shootout between Ana Ivanovic and Daniela Hantuchova. World No. 5 Ivanovic won for the Aces, giving the team an early lead. “We played on a slower and softer court, so it was a little more difficult to play and return. You get more time. As a team we get our energy from the bench and keep each other charged up. It’s fun! The serve and volley towards the end was for Pete (Sampras),” Ivanovic said.
Fabrice Santoro took on Patrick Rafter in a set where the Frenchman played sharp, dominating tennis. Though Rafter bravely won three games after being down 5 – 0, the set eventually went to the Aces. Hantuchova took to the court with Bruno Soares for the mixed doubles against the all-Indian pair of Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna.
Both highly consistent teams entered a shootout won by the Aces. In a set that witnessed great reflexes and several sensational tennis moves, Bopanna returned to the court with Gael Monfils against Soares and Lleyton Hewitt. The Aces triumphed with 6 – 3. Monfils faced Tomas Berdych in the final Men’s Singles set, which the latter led from the beginning. The set went into overtime and was won by Berdych 8 – 4.
“We know there is pressure but we know what we have to do. That is to win! We will make it. All my team members are special, they give out a lot of positive energy and are all great,” the ever-entertaining Monfils said after the match.
