Federer Completes Amazing 5-Set Rally vs Monfils; Cilic Upsets Berdych

September 4, 2014 ITS Staff New York USA –Five-time U.S. Open champion Roger Federer completed an amazing rally coming back from two sets down and two match-points to defeat the talented Gael Monfils in five sets 4-6, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-2 in their quarter-final match Thursday night.

The 33-year old proved he is capable of finishing strong after a gallant stand from the Frenchman’s solid all-around game surviving the double match point which the Swiss Maestro faced serving at 4-5 in the fourth set to stay in the match.

Federer, however, reeled for four consecutive points to hold on to the delightful roar of the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd. It would be the turning point of the intense contest as Federer would win eight of the last ten games securing the match after three hours and 20 minutes.

With the victory, Federer took one step closer in his bid to win his 18th Grand Slam crown but will next have to hurdle Marin Cilic, whom he has a 5-0 edge in career meetings, to reach the final. The No.14 seed Croatian reached his second career Grand Slam semi-final after an upset victory over sixth seeded Tomas Berdych in straight sets 6-2, 6-4, 7-6(4) in the U.S. Open quarter-finals on Thursday.

This season, Cilic reached the third round of the French Open before losing to Novak Djokovic in four sets; and the quarterfinals of Wimbledon beating Paul-Henri Mathieu, Andreas Haider-Maurer, Berdych and Jeremy Chardy before losing to Novak Djokovic in five sets.

The other semifinal will see Top-seed Novak Djokovic face off with Kei Nishikori on Saturday.
