Djokovic, Wawrinka Cruise to Third Round

atpworldtour.com: January 22 2015 Melbourne, Australia – World No. 1 Novak Djokovic cruised into the third round of the Australian Open with a commanding 6-0, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Russian Andrey Kuznetsov, Thursday on Rod Laver Arena.

 

Djokovic won nine straight games to start his first FedEx ATP Head2Head meeting against the 23-year-old Kuznetsov, currently No. 88 in the Emirates ATP Rankings. The Serbian dropped serve at love to fall behind 0-2 in the third set, but won the next four games. He capitalised on seven of his 13 break points during the 84-minute match.

 

The 27-year-old Djokovic is looking to become just the second man to win five Australian Open titles. He next faces No. 31 seed Fernando Verdasco, who hit 15 aces to beat Go Soeda 6-3, 6-2, 7-6(3).

 

Defending champion Stan Wawrinka prevailed against Romania’s Marius Copil in a tight three-set match Thursday to reach the third round of the Australian Open. The World No. 4 won 108 points to Copil’s 104, closing out a 7-6(4), 7-6(4), 6-3 victory in two hours and 16 minutes. Wawrinka secured the decisive break to go up 5-3 when Copil double-faulted.

 

Wawrinka will look to extend his winning streak in Melbourne to 10 matches when he next plays Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen. Wawrinka and Nieminen have split their previous two FedEx ATP Head2Head meetings. The 33-year-old Nieminen, making his 14th appearance at the Australian Open, advanced with a 7-6(4), 7-5, 7-5 win over German Matthias Bachinger.

Federer, Nadal, Murray Advance to 3rd Rd; Sharapova Survives 2 MPs vs Qualifier

January 21 2015 ITS Staff Melbourne, Australia – World No. 2 Roger Federer advanced to the third round of the Australian Open on Wednesday after rallying past hard-hitting Italian Simone Bolelli 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 played under humid conditions at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne. The four-time Australian Open champion will next face either 29th-seeded Frenchman Jeremy Chardy or Italian Andreas Seppi.

 

Also advancing is sixth-seeded Andy Murray and seventh-seed Tomas Berdych. Murray dominated Australian Marinko Matosevic 6-1 6-3 6-2 while Berdych defeated Austrian Jurgen Melzer also in straight sets 7-6(0) 6-2 6-2.

 

In women’s singles, World No.2 Maria Sharapova came back strong after surviving two match points in her second round match against qualifier and world No.150 Alexandra Panova 6-1 4-6 7-5. Sharapova rallied from 4-1 down in the third set then fought off two match points at 5-4 before reeling three straight games to clinch the match.
