Day 2

Del Potro Makes Winning Return; Janowicz Denies Kyrgios; Tomis into Second Round

apiainternational.com.au: January 13 2015 Sydney, Australia – Juan Martin del Potro has made a winning return to tennis after almost 11 months on the sidelines, beating Sergiy Stakhovsky in the opening round of Apia International Sydney 2015. Del Potro defeated the Ukrainian 6-3 7-6(4), celebrating with a roar and his arms held aloft when she sealed victory on a Stakhovsky error.

The defending champion was overcome with emotion in his on-court interview, saying how pleased he was to be back and thanking the fans – including a large Argentinian contingent – for their support.  He will next face top seed Fabio Fognini.

A dominant Bernard Tomic (Qld) wasted little time in getting his campaign for a third straight Apia International Sydney final appearance underway with an easy victory over Dutch qualifier Igor Sijsling at Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre this afternoon.

The 2013 champion and 2014 finalist started the way he intended to finish, breaking Sijsling in the fourth match of the game to take an early 3-1 lead. From there he didn’t look back, the 22-year-old in complete control as he closed out the first set 6-1 in just 19 minutes. It was a similar story in the second set, with Tomic reeling off a back hand passing shot down the line to go up 2-1. Sijsling managed to hold serve at 5-1 to prevent an exact replica of the first set but Tomic, who won 85 per cent of his first serves, fired down his eighth ace to take the match 6-1 6-2.

Jerzy Janowicz has produced a breathtaking display of montrous serving and baseline power-hitting to beat Aussie young gun Nick Kyrgios in a third-set tiebreak at Apia International Sydney. The Polish star sealed a 6-1 6-7 7-6 victory after 1am at Ken Rosewall Arena, moving through to a second-round meeting with fifth seed Leonardo Mayer of Argentina.

The match threatened to be a one-sided affair; Janowicz unleash a barrage of powerful first serves and crushed his forehand past a shell-shocked Kyrgios, breaking the Aussie twice en route to taking the first set in just 23 minutes. It was Kyrgios’ first competitive outing of the season after being forced to withdraw from the Hopman Cup due to a back injury, yet he admirably settled into the contest.
