Djokovic, Federer, Berdych into Quarters; Ferrer Ousts Murray; Lopez Tops Isner

atpworldtour.com: October 9 2014 Shanghai, China - Novak Djokovic extended his winning streak in China to 27 matches on Thursday as the two-time defending Shanghai Rolex Masters champion booked his spot in the quarter-finals.

 

Top seed Djokovic earned a hard-fought 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Mikhail Kukushkin in two hours and seven minutes. He will next meet fifth seed David Ferrer, who is bidding to join the Serbian at next month’s Barclays ATP World Tour Finals.

 

David Ferrer won the battle of two Barclays ATP World Tour Finals contenders on Wednesday. Ferrer moved ahead of Andy Murray in the Emirates ATP Race To London after a third-round 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory over the two-time former Shanghai Rolex Masters champion. Ferrer broke a two-match losing streak against Murray in the pair’s 13th meeting (Murray leads 7-6).

 

Tomas Berdych will overtake Marin Cilic at No. 6 in the Emirates ATP Race To London if he beats Gilles Simon on Friday for a place in the Shanghai Rolex Masters semi-finals.

 

Berdych, the sixth seed this week, added 90 points with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Ivo Karlovic, who hit 19 aces, in the 65-minute third-round victory Thursday.

 

Berdych is now 45 points behind Cilic in the battle to qualify for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, to be held at The O2 in London from 9-16 November. Cilic lost in the Shanghai first round (l. to Karlovic).

 

Simon, who advanced to last week’s Rakuten Japan Open Tennis Championships semi-finals (l. to Raonic), rolled past qualifier Malek Jaziri 6-2, 6-3 in 74 minutes.

 

Mikhail Youzhny beat Juan Monaco for the third time in four meetings with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 victory. He will contest his fourth ATP World Tour quarter-final of the season against Rafael Nadal's conqueror, Feliciano Lopez, who lost just four of his first-service points to defeat No. 13 seed John Isner 6-3, 6-4.
