Federer Survives Istomin, Faces Dimitrov in Quarters; Boric Keeps Run; Raonic Advance

atpworldtour.com: October 23 2014 Basel, Switzerland - One day after racing to victory in 47 minutes, five-time champion Roger Federer was stretched by Denis Istomin 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the second round of the Swiss Indoors Basel. Federer, the top seed at this ATP World Tour 500 event, fired off six aces and broke his Uzbekistani opponent two times to secure the victory in one hour and 48 minutes and extend his lead to 6-0 in their FedEx ATP Head2Head series.

Federer continues his quest for a sixth crown in Basel against fifth seed Grigor Dimitrov in the quarter-finals. Dimitrov advanced with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Canadian young gun Vasek Pospisil. The 23-year-old Dimitrov, last week’s finalist at the Stockholm Open, claimed 70 per cent of his service points (34 of 48) and did not face a break point during the 64-minute encounter.

Borna Coric set a quarter-final clash with childhood idol Rafael Nadal at the Swiss Indoors Basel as he defeated Andrey Golubev 6-4, 6-4 on Thursday at the ATP World Tour 500 tournament. The 17-year-old Croatian backed up his upset win over sixth seed Ernests Gulbis from the first round, claiming the sixth tour-level win of his career as he converted three of his four break points and won 72 per cent of his service points

Barclays ATP World Tour Finals hopeful Milos Raonic survived a second-round scare, edging Donald Young in a third-set tie-break 6-4, 6-7(5), 7-6(2) to reach the Basel quarter-finals. The Canadian fired 22 aces and saved both break points he faced to beat Young in two hours and 19 minutes.

The 23-year-old Raonic is hoping to make up ground in the Emirates ATP Race To London after opening-round exits in Shanghai and Moscow, while he was suffering from a virus, saw him passed by Andy Murray. The Toronto native is looking to qualify for the season finale in London for the first time. Reaching the quarter-finals takes him to within 45 points of Murray, who cannot add points until the semi-finals in Valencia.

Benjamin Becker reached the quarter-finals when Mikhail Kukushkin was forced to retire from their match with a shoulder injury. Becker was leading 6-7(3), 7-6(4), 4-0 and goes on to face Ivo Karlovic, who struck 18 aces as he battled past qualifier Kenny De Schepper 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-3 in just under two hours.
