atpworldtour.com: October 21 2014 Basel, Switzerland – Milos Raonic remains in contention for a spot at next month's Barclays ATP World Tour Finals after he reached the Swiss Indoors Basel second round on Tuesday.
Fourth seed Raonic, who is making his debut at the ATP World Tour 250 tournament, hit 12 aces to defeat Steve Johnson 7-6(4), 6-4 to improve to a 44-16 match record on a career-best season. He has a 34-11 tie-breaks record in 2014. The Canadian is in tenth position in the Emirates ATP Race To London.
Mikhail Kukushkin recorded just the second Top 10 win of his career, knocking out third seed Stan Wawrinka 6-4, 6-7(1), 6-3 for a second-round meeting against Benjamin Becker. The Russian’s previous Top 10 win came over then No. 10 Mikhail Youzhny in the 2010 St. Petersburg final.
Wawrinka committed 23 unforced errors in the first set, but came within two points of clinching the second set at 5-4, when Kukushkin was serving at deuce. Kukushkin failed to convert one break point opportunity in the next game and paid the price for a slow start in the tie-break.
The World No. 84 raced out to a 3-0 lead in the third set before Wawrinka countered and drew level. The Swiss was unable to maintain the momentum, double-faulting to concede the break in the eighth game, one of his 55 errors in the match. Kukushkin served out the victory after two hours and 15 minutes. Wawrinka was making his 11th appearance in Basel, having reached the semi-finals in 2006 (l. to Gonzalez) and 2011 (l. to Federer). Kukushkin reached last week’s Moscow semi-finals (l. to Cilic).
Eighth seed Ivo Karlovic added 23 aces to his 2014 tally (1,110 aces) in a 7-6(4), 6-3 win over Lukas Rosol. Ivan Dodig denied Marco Chiudinelli his first tour-level match win of the year with a 6-4, 6-7(7), 6-4 win in two hours and 52 minutes. Benjamin Becker and qualifier Kenny de Schepper were also among first-round winners.
