Monday April 22, 2013, ITS Staff: Palermo, Italy - Roberta Vinci beat Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-3 on Monday to secure Italy’s spot in the Fed Cup World Group finals in November against Russia who rallied past Slovakia 3-2. The world No.7 ranked Vinci clinched the fourth rubber in the best-of-five tie 3-1 after rain postponed the matches on Sunday.  Vinci broke Safarova in the eighth game of the final set for a 5-3 lead in before sealing the tie on her third match point. The fifth rubber doubles was cancelled. See video hightlights below

 

Sunday April 21, 2013 ITS Staff – Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic defeated Sara Errani 2-6 6-2 6-0 in the third rubber on Sunday cutting Italy's lead to 2-1 before rain stopped the festivities. 

 

Saturday, April 20: World No.1 doubles players Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci won their singles matches to give Italy a 2-0 lead over Czech Republic in the World Group semi-finals of Fed Cup on Saturday. Errani, ranked No.7 in singles, registered a 6-4, 6-2 victory over No.25 Lucie Safarova in the first rubber followed by world singles No.12 Vinci who defeated No.8 Petra Kvitova 6-4 6-1. Vinci recently won the WTA BNP Paribas Katowice Open where she triumphed over Kvitova in the finals also in straight sets. Italy won the Fed Cup in 2009 and 2010 while the Czechs have won the past two years in 2011 and 2012 including a semi-final win last year over Italy 4-1. Italy can clinch the tie and advance to the finals with a singles win on Sunday with Errani taking on Kvitova in the first reverse rubber.

April 21, 2013, ITS Staff: Moscow - Russia completed a remarkable comeback victory with a stunning three consecutive match wins on Sunday after entering the day behind 0-2 against Slovakia in the Fed Cup World Group semi-finals.

 

Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina won the decisive doubles rubber rallying past Dominika Cibulkova and Daniela Hantuchova 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 to secure the tie after their Russian teammates Maria Kirilenko and Makarova won the reverse matches to level at the Krylatskoy Stadium on indoor clay courts. Kirilenko defeated Cibulkova 7-5, 6-1 in the first reverse singles while Makarova downed Hantuchova 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. 

 

On Saturday, Slovakia surprised Russia by winning the first two rubbers giving the visitors a 2-0 lead after the opening singles. World No.15 Dominika Cibulkova rallied past No.19 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 5-7, 6-1, 6-4 in the first rubber then No.75 Daniela Hantuchova stunned No.13 Maria Kirilenko 6-2, 6-4 to put Slovakia one rubber away from advancing to the final for the first time since winning the title in 2002.
