Nadal Ends Federer Run; Sets Wawrinka Clash in Final
January 24 2014 ITS Michael Duranceau Melbourne – World No. 1 Rafael Nadal put a lid onto Roger Federer's resurgent streak by beating the Swiss Maestro in straight sets 7-6(4) 6-3 6-3 Friday night at the Australian Open to book a spot for his 19th Grand Slam final appearance.
Nadal, whose dominance over Federer improved to 23 wins against 10 losses, sets up a final showdown on Sunday with another Swiss Stanislas Warinka who reached the final after ousting three-time defending champion Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals and Tomas Berdych in the semi-finals.
Riding on a four match winning streak against Federer, Nadal’s performance Friday night was a remarkable display of skillful recoveries and perfectly timed passing shots against the 17-time Grand Slam champion who attacked the net at every opportunity.
After convincing wins over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the 4th round and Andy Murray in the quarters, Federer was hoping to join his friend Wawrinka in an all-Swiss final but had no answer to the tenacity and consistency of Nadal whom he hasn't beaten in a Grand Slam match since 2007.
Nadal beat Federer in 2009 for his only Australian Open title and if he wins on Sunday, Nadal would be the only player in history to win all four Grand Slam events at least twice. Nadal is 12-0 in head-to-head matches against Wawrinka.
