Nadal Wins Opener in Bid for 9th Title; Ferrer, Dolgopolov Ousted

barcelonaopenbancsabadell.com April 23, 2014 Barcelona - World No. 1 Rafael Nadal safely moved to the third round to open his bid for a record ninth Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell title on Wednesday after an unexpected tough match against Spanish compatriot Albert Ramos 7-6(2), 6-4 victory over.

 

Nadal found himself down a break in the first set but swiftly recovered hitting 18 winners in the two-hour tightly contested match.  Nadal clinched his 40th victory in a row at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell, which is the 301 on his record as a professional player on clay. Right now is the tenth player and more wins in this area, having passed today the Argentine José Luis Clerc.

 

"I'm happy. I knew it would be complicated, as are the first games of the tournament. I have made many mistakes, but I've played with passion and enthusiasm. Granted it has not been a brilliant game,” said Nadal in the press conference. "It was a good win for me since I didn't play my best match in Monte-Carlo. The next match was never going to be easy. I am happy with the way I battled and proud of the victory today.”

 

Teymuraz Gabashvili stunned No.2 seed David Ferrer 6-4, 6-2 to register his biggest win of his career. Just last week, the Valencian upset Nadal at the Monte-Carlo quarter-finals before bowing out to eventual winner Stanislas Wawrinka in the semi-finals. The No. 55-ranked Georgian Gabashvili broke Ferrer’s serve four times in the one hour and 21 minute match.

 

Sixth-seed Nicolas Almagro also advanced to the third round with a 7-5, 7-6(4) triumph over Martin Klizan hitting 12 aces while converting two of his 10 break point chances. Albert Montanes upset eighth seed Alexandr Dolgopolov 7-6(5), 6-3 in 93 minutes, setting a third-round clash with ninth seed Latvian Ernests Gulbis.

Nishikori, Robredo into Third Round; Ramos Sets Nadal Clash

April 22 2014 ITS Staff Barcelona - Spain’s Albert Ramos will play defending champion Rafael Nadal in his debut in Barcelona on Wednesday. The Catalan resident Ramos defeated Nicolay Davydenko 6-4 6-4.

 

After the match, Ramos felt good about his performance but said that Nadal will be a very tough opponent for the next round. Nadal is looking to win his record ninth Conde de Godó Trophy this week.

 

Fourth seed Kei Nishikori, won his first match at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell after defeating local player Roberto Bautista in three sets, 1-6, 6-4, 3-6. Nishikori, who was sidelined with a groin injury since beating Roger Federer at the Sony Open quarter-finals, won his opening match in just under two hours. He will face Andrey Golubev, who was leading 6-4, 5-1 when French No. 16 seed Benoit Paire withdrew due to an injury.

 

Another local favorite, ​​Tommy Robredo advanced without much difficulty over Australian Marinko Matosevic 6-3, 6-4.  Promising youngster Dominic Thiem also made his way into the third round after outlasting Marcel Granollers in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. His next opponent will be the winner of the match between Fabio Fognini and Santiago Giraldo.

 

German Philipp Kohlschreiber defeated Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin is 7-6, 6-2 and will face the winner of the match between Jurgen Melzer and Mikhail Kukushkin.
