Huey Leads Philippines Over Sri Lanka in Davis Cup Win 3-1
February 2, 2014 ITS Staff Colombo, Sri Lanka - Treat Huey gave the Philippines a 3-1 victory over Sri Lanka after the World Ranked No.21 ATP doubles star defeated the hosts No.1 player Harshana Godamanna 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in the first reverse singles rubber on Sunday.
Huey, who recently reached his second straight Grand Slam doubles quarter-finals at the Australian Open with British partner Dominic Inglot, was a last minute substitute nominated by team captain Roland Kraut after Filipino No.1 singles player Ruben Gonzales was injured during Saturday’s doubles match.
Gonzales and Huey powered their way to a 6-1 6-0 6-1 rout of Godamanna and Rajeev Rajapakse to edge ahead 2-1 going in to Sunday’s rubbers.
On opening day Friday, Gonzales leveled the tie for the visitors when he demolished Dineshkanthan Thangarajah 6-3 6-3 6-0 after No.2 singles player Patrick Tierro was outlasted by Godamanna in a marathon five-set opening rubber 6-3 6-7(8) 4-6 6-2 6-3.
The Philippines improved to 8-0 against Sri Lanka. The Filipinos will now take on the winner between Pakistan and Vietnam in the second round in April.

Huey had lost in a heart-breaking deciding fifth set on the fifth rubber 5-7 4-6 6-3 6-1 6-3 to Michael Venus after Gonzales won the fourth rubber 7-6(2) 4-6 1-6 7-5 8-6 over Jose Statham. Both matches took 10 hours going as late as 3am Monday morning to complete.
