Nadal, Wawrinka, Raonic into 4th Rd; Serena, Li Na, Sharapova Enter Quarters

March 24 2014 ITS Staff Miami, Florida - World No.1 Rafael Nadal followed up his dominant performance at the Sony Open on Monday this time blitzing  Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin 6-1 6-0 to reach the fourth round at Crandon Park.

 

Nadal, who also won giving up only four games against former World No.1 Lleyton Hewitt on Saturday, broke Istomin six times while saving all three breakpoints he faced in the 59 minute match. Nadal faces No.14 seed Fabio Fognini in the fourth round. Italian advanced with a 4-6 6-3 6-3 win over Spain's Roberto Bautista Agut.

 

In other men’s singles third round matches, reiging Australian Open titlist Stanislas Wawrinka safely booked his spot in the round of 16s after a steady 7-5 6-4 victory over Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France.

 

Canada’s Milos Raonic beat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-1, 6-2 in just 57 minutes to advance to the Sony Open Tennis fourth round. The No. 12 seed will face Germany’s Benjamin Becker who defeated Aljaz Bedene of Slovakia 6-3, 7-5. Ukraine's Alexandr Dolgopolov, No.22 seed, shook off a bad first set but recovered firmly to rally past fast-rising Serbian Dusan Lajovic 3-6 6-0 7-6(5).

In the women's side, defending champion and No. 1 seed Serena Williams crushed American Coco Vandeweghe 6-3, 6-1 Monday afternoon in the women’s fourth round. The 17-time Grand slam champion sets up a quarter-final clash against No.5 seed Angelique Kerber, who outlasted Ekaterina Makarova 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.

 

Maria Sharapova, last year’s finalist to Williams, battled past Kirsten Flipkens in a fourth round thriller gaining a 3-6 6-4 6-1 victory. Germany’s No.5 seed Angelique Kerber also advanced to the quarter-finals by outlasting No.23 Ekaterina Makarova 6-4 1-6 6-3.
