Day 1 Wimbledon
Murray Wins Centre Court Opener; Djokovic, Li Na Advance in Straight Sets
June 23, 2014 ITS Staff Wimbledon, England - Day one of Wimbledon got underway on Monday with the defending champion Andy Murray of Great Britain opening the two-week festivities at the All England Tennis Club on the pristine Centre Court. By tradition, the returning champion is given the honor of playing the first match.
The British hero was accorded a standing ovation as we walked onto the court and immediately delivered with a blistering performance in defeating Belgium's David Goffin 6-1 6-4 7-5. Murray, who became the first British man since Fred Perry in 1936 to win the title at Wimbledon, recorded his 450th professional match win.
Following Murray on Centre Court, China’s Li Na, the reigning Australian Champion and No.2 seed, overcame a 3-5 first set deficit to defeat Poland’s No. 183 Paula Kania 7-5 6-3.
Last year’s finalist and top-seed Novak Djokovic began his bid for a second Wimbledon title with a punishing exhibition of his all-around skills demolishing Kazakhstan’s Andrey Golubev 6-0 6-1 6-4.
Men's top seed Novak Djokovic, the man Murray beat in spine-tingling fashion last July to become the first home men's singles champion at the All England Club for 77 years, also began in style, crushing Andrey Golubev 6-0 6-1 6-4 in his first grasscourt outing of the year.
