Day 3 Wimbledon

Djokovic, Murray Move to 3rd Round; Ferrer, Azarenka Upset; Li Na Advances

June 25, 2014 ITS Staff – David Ferrer was upset by former Junior Wimbledon champion of 2009 Andrey Kuznetsov 6-7(5) 6-0 3-6 6-3 6-2 in the second round of Wimbledon on Wednesday.

The loss to the young Russian marked the first time the Valencian will not reach the third round after 17 consecutive appearances of a Grand Slam tournament.

The seventh-seed Ferrer, the 2013 French Open finalist to Rafael Nadal, also reached the quarter-finals in the last ten major events. For the No.118th ranked Kuznetsov, it was his first victory against a Top-10 player.

Also bowing out on Day 3 is two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka when she was beaten 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 by Bojana Jovanovski. It was Azarenka’s second tournament after being out for four months to nurse a leg injury. Azarenka played last week’s Eastbourne Aegon International falling Camilla Giorgi also in three sets.

Defending champion Andy Murray conceded only two games to defeat 2013 NCAA Singles Champion Blaz Rola of Slovakia 6-1 6-1 6-0 sending a message that he is still the man to beat in Wimbledon. Murray needed on only 81 minutes to beat the former Ohio State Buckeye star who advanced after ousting Spain’s Pablo Andujar 6-3 6-1 6-4  in the first round.

Also reaching the third round was reigning Australian Open champion and No.2 Li Na who beat Austria’s Yvonne Meusburger 6-2, 6-2. Li hit 33 winners but committed 21 unforced errors while Meusburger managed to produce just four winners the entire match. Poland’s fourth-seed Agnieszka needed less than an hour to beat Australia's Casey Dellacqua 6-4, 6-0.
