Jenkins Outlasts Sarmiento, Gibbs Beats Sanchez, Enters Quaterfinals

May 24 2013 ITS Staff: Urbana, Illinois – NCAA Team Champion Virginia’s top player and No.3 seed Jamere Jenkins advanced to the third quarterfinals with a hard-earned three-set victory over University of Southern California’s Ray Sarmiento 7-6 2-6 6-4 in the NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championship.
Jenkins, who last fall won the ITA Indoor Singles Championships, remains the favorite to win the tournament. The Cavalier senior will now face No.37 Soren Hess-Olesen of University of Texas who earned a last 8 spot after outlasting No.25 Marcos Giron of UCLA 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Center at the University of Illinois.
Meanwhile, defending champion Nicole Gibbs of Stanford continued her run to her second straight NCAA Singles championship quest after defeating Texas A&M’s No.4 seed Christina Sanchez-Quintanar for the second time in five days 6-4 6-4. During the team finals between Stanford and Texas A&M on Monday, Sanchez led Gibbs 6-2 2-0 before Gibbs won 12 straight games to secure the singles point for her team.
Auburn senior No.19 Andreas Mies also advanced to the quarterfinals registering a straight set triumph over Sarmiento teammate USC’s No.45 Yannick Hanfmann 6-3, 6-2 while Pepperdine’s No.11 seed Sebastian Fanselow ousted seeded No.8 Peter Kobelt of Ohio State’s 6-4, 6-2. Mies and Fanselow will vie for a semi-final slot on Saturday.
