May 23 2013 ITS Staff: Urbana, Illinois - Auburn senior Andreas Mies advanced to the third round of the NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championship with a three-set victory on Thursday over 39th-ranked Mitchell Frank of University of Virginia 4-6 6-0 6-2.

Frank, who clinched the team title for the Cavaliers on Monday, upset the tournament's top seed and No.1-ranked Mikelis Libietis of Tennessee in the first round. Frank’s teammate No.3 seed Jamere Jenkins, advanced to the third round after getting past No.26 ranked Yannick Maden of Clemson 6-3 6-4 at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Center at the University of Illinois.

Mies, ranked 19th in the nation will now play against No.45 Yannick Hanfmann of USC who upset No.15 Matija Pecotic, of Princeton 6-4, 6-1. Jenkins will play the winner of the match between USC’s No.16 seed Ray Sarmiento and No.80 Greg Andrews of Notre Dame.

In women’s singles, defending singles and doubles champion Nicole Gibbs of Stanford took one step closer to her quest to win back-to-back titles when the No.13 ranked Cardinal romped to a 6-4 6-4 victory over No.58 Ronit Yurovsky of University of Michigan.

A 2012 All-American in both singles and doubles, Gibbs pulled off a historic sweep of last year’s NCAA singles and doubles titles joining Stanford's Linda Gates (1985) and UCLA's Keri Phebus (1995) as only the third player in NCAA history to capture both NCAA titles in the same season.

In a repeat of last Monday’s team final match, Gibbs will play Texas A&M’s No.4 seed Christina Sanchez-Quintanar who defeated No. 19 Maho Kowase of Georgia 6-2, 6-1. During the team finals between Stanford and Texas A&M on Monday, Sanchez led Gibbs 6-2 2-0 before the latter reeled off 12 straight games to seal the victory.
