uclabruins.com: May 26, 2014 Athens, GA - UCLA men's tennis player Marcos Giron became the 11th NCAA Singles Champion in school history on Monday, posting a straight-set victory over Pepperdine's Alex Sarkissian in the men's final at Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Giron, a junior from Thousand Oaks, Calif., is UCLA's first NCAA Singles winner since Benjamin Kohlloeffel in 2006.

"This means so much to me," said Giron, who with the win earns one of the USTA's wild cards to the U.S. Open in August. "This has to be the biggest tournament win of my career. I'd like to thank Billy Martin and the entire UCLA program for everything they have done for me."

Giron, who lost just one set in six matches during the tournament, broke Sarkissian in the fifth game of the first set to take a 3-2 lead. He then went on to hold serve for the remainder of the set to take it 6-4. Giron continued his hot play to start the second set, breaking Sarkissian twice to eventually take a 4-0 lead. Sarkissian was able to stop the bleeding and hold serve for 4-1, however Giron took the next two games for a 6-4, 6-1 victory.

Monday marked the second meeting of the season between Giron and Sarkissian, with Giron also winning in straight sets on Feb. 22 at UCLA.

Only a junior, Giron still has one season of eligibility remaining. He mentioned in his on-court interview following the match that he is keeping his options open. "I'm going to play a lot this summer and see where I'm at," said Giron. "I'll take the fall season off but after that I might come back to school." Giron ends the season with a 30-5 overall record, marking this second-straight 30-win season. His victory over Sarkissian is also his team-leading 18th of the year over a ranked player.

After making a bit of history yesterday, becoming just the seventh Wave since 1980 to earn ITA All-American honors in both singles and doubles in the same season, Sarkissian continued to etch his name in the program annuls.

UCLA’s No.2 seed Marcos Giron also advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA men’s tennis singles championships with 6-1 6-3 win ove Cal’s Ben McLachlan. Giron is the lone Pac-12 tennis player remaining in the men’s brackets, as Bruin Mackenzie McDonald Mackenzie’s run came to an end in the quarterfinals, dropping a three-setter to Texas’ Søren Hess-Olesen 6-3, 0-6, 6-2.

uclabruins.com: May 23, 2014 Athens, GA  – Freshman Mackenzie McDonald, junior Marcos Giron and junior Chanelle Van Nguyen each posted wins on Friday to advance to the quarterfinals of singles play at the NCAA Individual Championships, being held this week at Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

UCLA is the only school with two players left in the men's draw. As the No. 2 seed, Giron is the highest seeded player left in the draw after top-seeded Clay Thompson of UCLA was beaten in Wednesday's opening round. Giron downed hometown favorite Nathan Pasha of Georgia, 7-6, 6-3 on Friday.

Giron's win sets up a showdown with Cal's Ben McLachlan on Saturday. The two players met at No. 1 singles on April 4 at UCLA however their match was suspended once the Bruins clinched the win. Giron was leading 6-3, 3-6, 2-1 at the time of suspension.

McDonald also advanced to the quarterfinals, although he needed three sets to get past 9-16 seeded Nik Scholtz of Ole Miss, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4. McDonald will next face 9-16 seeded Soren Hell-Olesen of Texas.

In women's action, the Bruins dropped two of three matches on Friday with only Van Nguyen advancing. Van Nguyen, a 9-16 seed, downed Stanford's Carol Zhao, 7-5, 6-2. She will take on Duke's Ester Goldfeld in the quarterfinals. Van Nguyen is the last remaining UCLA player in the women's tournament, as second-seeded Robin Anderson and eighth-seeded Jennifer Brady both suffered round of 16 losses on Friday.

gousfbulls.com: May 23, 2014 Athens, GA  – USF sophomore Roberto Cid advanced to the NCAA Singles Championship quarterfinals with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over No. 41 Dane Webb of Oklahoma on Friday afternoon.

Cid led Sarkissian, 6-4, 2-6, 5-4, earlier this season on April 15 when the match was called at the end of USF’s 4-2 victory over Pepperdine in Champaign, Ill. Sarkissian, a redshirt senior, defeated No. 38 Leandro Toledo of Minnesota, 7-6 (1), 6-2, in his second straight trip to the NCAA round of 16.

Cid’s path to the quarterfinals started with a 6-4, 6-3 win over No. 1 Clay Thompson of UCLA on Wednesday. Cid became the first USF men’s player to earn All-America honors on Thursday when he defeated No. 68 Alen Salibasic of Drake, 7-6 (5), 6-1.
