Tournament of Champions Women’s Singles Final Sunday Nov 2

4-Andrea Petkovic beat 3-Flavia Pennetta  1-6 6-3 6-4

Petkovic Wins TOC Sofia Title, Outlasts Pennetta in Final

wtatennis.com: October 26, 2014 Sofia, Bulgaria - , Bulgaria - Andrea Petkovic clawed her way back to beat Flavia Pennetta in three sets and finish 2014 on a high with the season-ending Garanti Koza WTA Tournament Of Champions title.

Both players were battle-scarred going into the final - they had both lost matches in the round robin, Petkovic to Carla Suárez Navarro and Pennetta to Garbiñe Muguruza, and both were coming off long, successful seasons. It wasn't just about momentum - it was about what was left in the tank.

Early on, it looked like Petkovic had nothing left in the tank - she got just one game on the board as Pennetta cruised, 6-1, in 36 minutes. But little by little she built her comeback, breaking in the first game of the second set and riding that break all the way to the set, and after Pennetta went ahead 2-0 in the third, Petkovic reeled off six of the next seven games to seal the victory and the title. The No.4-seeded Petkovic managed to scrape past the No.3-seeded Pennetta, 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Petkovic now has three WTA titles on the year, having already won in Charleston and Bad Gastein. She is the fifth player to win three or more this year after Serena Williams (seven), Maria Sharapova (four), Ana Ivanovic (four) and Petra Kvitova (also three). Petkovic now has five WTA titles total.

And so the Tournament Of Champions has completed its sixth and final year on the WTA calendar, having been held for the first three years in Bali, Indonesia (with Aravane Rezai winning in 2009 and Ana Ivanovic in 2010 and 2011) and the last three years here in Sofia, Bulgaria (Nadia Petrova and WTA Rising Star Simona Halep won the first two editions in 2012 and 2013, and now Petkovic).

Pennetta Downs Suarez-Navarro, Petkovic Denies Muguruza in TOC Semifinals

wtatennis.com: November 1 2014 Sofia, Bulgaria - Flavia Pennetta defeated Carla Suárez Navarro in straight sets 6-4 6-2 to set up a championship clash with Andrea Petkovic at the Garanti Koza WTA Tournament Of Champions.

The No.5-seeded Suárez Navarro drew first blood in the match, breaking for 2-1 and looking like she would build on that as she went up 30-15 in the next game, but Pennetta got herself back into it, breaking in that game and staying even through 4-all, the set lasting nearly an hour at that point.

That's when the No.3-seeded Pennetta cracked the match open, though, reeling off four games in a row - and 16 of 20 points - to go up 6-4, 2-0, and even though Suárez Navarro got the second set back even at 2-all, Pennetta just had too much momentum. Pennetta is now through to the 24th WTA final of her career. She's 10-13 in the first 23.

Awaiting Pennetta in the final is No.4 seed Andrea Petkovic, who held off a late surge to beat No.7 seed Garbiñe Muguruza in straight sets 6-1 6-4  in the first semifinal of the day.

With her unique brand of hard-hitting and consistency, Petkovic was just too solid for Muguruza throughout the first hour of the match, storming through the first set in just 24 minutes and, after falling behind 2-0 in the second set and facing a point for 3-0, winning five games in a row of her own to build a massive 6-1, 5-2 lead, even bringing up a match point in that game as she served for it.

The No.7-seeded Muguruza wasn't done - she fought that match point off with a huge forehand winner up the line, and after closing that game out fighting off two more match points serving at 3-5. She got to break point as Petkovic served for it 5-4, too, just one point away from evening the second set. But the No.4-seeded Petkovic steadied herself and finally managed to close-out the match.

Pennetta and Petkovic are tied in their head-to-head series, 2-2. They are 1-1 on hardcourts, but they haven't played on hardcourts in four and a half years - and never on indoor hardcourts.

Suarez-Navarro, Pennetta, Cibulkova Post Round Robin Wins in Sofia

wtatennis.com: October 28 2014 Sofia, Bulgaria - The first wave of round robin matches took place at the Garanti Koza WTA Tournament Of Champions on Tuesday, with one player in particular hitting a pretty rare milestone.

Carla Suárez Navarro, the No.5 seed, stormed out to a 6-0, 1-0 lead and held off some second set resistance to beat No.4 seed Andrea Petkovic in straight sets in an hour and 21 minutes, 6-0, 6-4. Suárez Navarro's win was her 50th WTA-level match win of the year, making her just the third player this year to cross that milestone after Ana Ivanovic (who has 58) and Serena Williams (who has 52).

Only one other player has a chance at 50 this year - Karolina Pliskova, who has 44 now, but she would need to come out of her alternate status in Sofia and play the Fed Cup final next week as well.

Earlier, No.2 seed Dominika Cibulkova opened the tournament with a hard-fought 6-3, 7-6(6) win over No.8 seed Tsvetana Pironkova. Cibulkova was in all kinds of trouble in the second set - she was down 4-1 and 5-3, and saw five match points evaporate as Pironkova turned 6-1 to 6-all in the breaker. But Cibulkova won the last two points to close it out after an hour and 51 minutes.

The last match of the day was the quickest match of them all, as No.3 seed Flavia Pennetta stormed past No.6 seed Alizé Cornet, 6-1, 6-2, winning the first four and last four games of the match. Pennetta maintained her mastery over Cornet - she's now 5-0 lifetime against the Frenchwoman.

The second wave of round robin matches takes place on Wednesday, starting with Petkovic facing Pironkova, Ekaterina Makarova playing Garbiñe Muguruza and Cibulkova against Suárez Navarro. The round robin portion runs from Tuesday to Friday, all feeding into the single elimination semifinals on Saturday and the championship match of the $750,000 season-ending event on Sunday.
