Czechs Reach 2nd Straight Davis Cup Final; Berdych, Stepanek Win Doubles
daviscup.com: September 14, 2013 by Craig Gabriel: Prague Czech Republic - Davis Cup by BNP Paribas stirs passions like no other tennis event in the world. In Prague the atmosphere was glorious, with amplified sound from the Czech and Argentine cheer squads.
When the Czechs sealed victory to put themselves into the Final for the second straight year and the third time in five years, the supporters from both teams continued to cheer for a long time, as is correct for two great sporting nations, respectful of each other to the end. The home team took an unassailable 3-0 lead over Argentina, the same nation they beat in the semifinals last year in Buenos Aires when Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek defeated Carlos Berlocq and Horacio Zeballos 63 64 62 in two hours three minutes.
“It’s definitely very exciting; Davis Cup means a lot, it’s special for us, for the whole country,” said Stepanek. “We loved so much delivering the trophy last year – it never gets old and we’d like to keep that trophy because it’s beautiful.” Berdych and Stepanek are most definitely the “go to” team for the Czechs even though they were not originally nominated for the doubles. No one doubted for one minute that the Czech captain Jaroslav Navratil would play to his strength and nominate his two best players for the critical doubles. Full article

Berdych, Stepanek Clinch Openers to Give Czechs 2-0 Lead Over Argentines
daviscup.com: September 13, 2013 by Craig Gabriel: Prague, Czech Republic - The Czech Republic had been waiting all year to play a Davis Cup by BNP Paribas tie at home having not played on home soil since winning the event last November. In their Davis Cup World Group semifinal tie in front of a near capacity arena in Prague they took a commanding 2-0 against Argentina after the first day’s singles rubbers. Radek Stepanek, who won the deciding match in last year’s final, gave the home side the first point when he defeated Juan Monaco 76 63 62 in two hours 33 minutes.
Tomas Berdych then put the Czechs in the driving seat with a 64 46 63 64 victory over Leonardo Mayer in three hours one minute. “It was very tough,” said Berdych.”Leornardo was playing really good tennis. He had nothing to lose at all, even though the score was not optimal for them – he was going on court when it was 0-1 for us but you know when you play against a guy at the top of the ranking you have nothing to lose and you can bring your best tennis and I think that’s what he did. He played really well.”
It was always the feeling was that the second match might have been the tough for the Czechs because Mayer doesn’t mind playing on faster hard courts. He certainly had Berdych concerned for about two sets. He was testing the world No. 5 and at times Berdych was finding it awkward to penetrate with some of his returns. Full article > Live Scores
